I will always remember watching Lost Highway at the dollar cinema at 13 years old and being mesmerized by Robert Blake's mystery man and that entire scene. That alone made want to go and watch everything David Lynch had done up to that point, the strangess was something very different. True artist, one of a kind. Greatly written, and best of fortune on the tour!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings about David Lynch. It was a very pleasant read. I will have to check out Catching The Big Fish. Best of luck on the tour.
I caught the Twin Peaks pilot when I was fourteen, a TV kid growing up in the PNW. Wow what a revelation it was, a highly stylized, visually stunning drama set in our own backyard, and on network television! Could you possibly make art anymore accessible? I love how Canada is this liminal space in that universe, where rules and laws do not apply. I still feel that sometimes around the border (both sides). There are some quietly sketchy strip malls that belie a secret underbelly. ;)
80s horror movies are one of my guilty pleasures and a couple weeks ago I watched one called Waxwork, released a year before Twin Peaks. It stars both Sheryl Lee and Dana Ashbrook very much playing their Twin Peaks characters (and Zach Gallagan playing his Gremlins character). Some of the set designs clearly foreshadow the Red Room. And there is even a little person, although he doesn't dance or talk backwards.
David Lynch had to be either secretly involved with or inspired by this movie. But then isn't it just like David Lynch to shift the lens on horror schlock or some other piece of disposable pop culture, revealing hidden prismatic depth and dark, mysterious beauty.
Can't wait to read about your recent Twin Peaks pilgrimage!
For our tribe, Lynch had the same magnitude of significance in Visions as Bowie had in Sounds.
Now we have lost both of them in January and we have only Sylvian who is a category if his own.
We have the memories, the sounds & visions of them but our world is poorer without their physical existence.
Keep up your wonderful writing dear Shannon and keep us updated with all your worth mentioning experiences during your tour. All the best, love & respect

Thanks Josue! Blake's laugh with the tape echo in that scene is seriously terrifying.

Thanks Johnmichael! It's a really lovely book, I loaned my copy to Kendall last week. ❤️
Beautifully written, Shannon - thank you for this. He was a giant. And thank you for your kindness towards us here in LA. ❤️
Thanks Lee! ❤️
